Licencing and Training
Licencing
In the UK, amateur radio licencing is managed by Ofcom, and there are three levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Full. To get a licence you must study for and pass an online examination at one of the levels. It is not possible to skip a level although a “Direct to Full” examination is available for those with significant experience and knowledge in a relevant field. Examiations are set and controlled by the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB). A study book is available for each level and can be purchased from the RSGB and training courses are offered online by a number of organisations and may also be offered by your local radio club. Once licenced you must revalidate your licence evey five years and adhere to the terms and conditions to maintain it. More detailed information on licencing can be obtained from the RSGB website under the heading “UK Amateur Licence”.
Training
Worksop Amateur Radio Society is a registered RSGB training centre and it offers training at all three levels.
Members can benefit from club based courses or, assistance on specific topics they are finding difficult and struggling with, if they have chosen to do their training via one of the online training providers.
Whilst the majority of examinations are now taken online, for those with special needs, the club can facilitate paper examination taken at the club under supervision.
For further information please speak to the club chairman (Martin Fearn) or the club secretary (David Urpeth). Contact David on secretary@g3rcw.or.uk.
